Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between commercial and self-publishing?
A: Commercial publishing (also royalty-based, in-house, mainstream, etc.) involves someone other than the author (typically a publishing house) paying for the costs associated with publishing and marketing a book. The author assigns ownership of the book to the publisher, who in turn pays a royalty to the author. The publisher seeks to recoup its costs through book sales. The royalties paid in such an arrangement are usually no more than 10% of sales (many authors take as little as 5-7% royalties). The publisher, who assumes most of the risks, keeps most of the rewards.
Self-publishing is an arrangement where the author retains ownership of the book, but must pay for the publishing and marketing of the book. One benefit of this is the author keeps all of the profits from book sales. With an effective marketing plan, self-publishing might be a good alternative.
Q: I've got a controversial book, will Kingsley market it?
A: That all depends on the book. We will not promote anything deemed pornographic, inflammatory, factually inaccurate, or hateful. We reserve the right to refuse any work for any reason. After all, our reputation depends on it.
Q: I want to promote my book, but Kingsley turned it down. Why?
A: Some books are a tough sell. We cannot in good conscience promote a book that probably won't have an audience. Many works of poetry, geneologies, family histories, and other books fall into this category. For more information on marketing, see the Marketing Services page.
Q: I want a family book designed and produced. I'm not interested in marketing, since I'm going to give it to my children and grandchildren. Can you just publish it without doing any marketing?
A: We work with you to decide the best program for your book. Marketing is a service we offer, but it's not "required." We can do as much or as little as is needed.
Q: Do I have to copyright my book?
A: In general, the law in the United States gives automatic copyright to the author. However, we recommend registering your copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office. This protects the author from unauthorized use of his/her work. We can perform this service for a nominal fee, or direct you to the appropriate place to get the forms to do it yourself.
Q: I need someone to edit my book. Can you do this?
A: Yes, we can do this. See our Publishing Services page for more information.
Q: Can I see some samples of your books?
A: Yes, please call us at 281-585-9559 to set up an appointment.
Q: Where is Kingsley located?
A: We are located at: 2206 N. Gordon St. Suite D
Alvin, Texas 77511
